Reflection on John 6:52-59

When I was younger I can remember our mother giving us a lesson on how we should act and what we should talk about around the table at meals. And she highly suggested we follow her guidelines.

Well, it has been a few years since then but myself and I would guess yourselves have heard every once in awhile about the importance of table fellowship, eating together.

And that when we eat together we are told we are not just consuming food but also taking in the conversation and presence of each other. The result being we not only leave the table having nourished our body but also our mind and spirit.

This is just a common example and tidbit of the instance Jesus speaks to us about in today’s Gospel Reading.

In the Gospel Reading He tells us if we eat the Flesh of the Son of Man and Drink His Blood we won’t just get by for the day but will “have life”. And when Jesus says, “have life” He means the Big Picture. Not just a life limited by time and space, but also a life beyond our common experience.

It is our great fortune that we have been blessed with a opportunity to also gather at the table of Jesus the Christ, as His family and friends, to partake not only in each other’s presence, but also that of the Son of God Who feeds us with the sacramental nourishment of His Word and the Bread of Life that brings richness to life in this world and the fullness of life eternal in the next.
