Psalm 27           Trust in God                         12-2-05 dcn.ca

One of the main reasons many are part of a faith community, is to have a place to find consolation. Consolation meaning: comfort, relief or support in the many difficulties that can confront us in the human experience.

Well, things have not changed in at least 4000 years. We know this from various sources but for our purpose this morning I’d like to look at the record we have in Sacred Scriptures, and specifically in the earliest prayers of our ancestors in faith, the Psalms. We actually don’t realize how much our faith uses the psalms in the different rites, prayers and liturgies we have. The one that is used in the Mass today is Psalm 27 and has 14 stanzas although in today’s liturgy we heard only 4 of them. This Psalm is officially titled “Trust in God” and starts out with a very good question we need to ask ourselves, especially in this season of hope, Advent.

The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom should I fear?

Although we do not necessarily have the same fears as people did when the Psalms were written. We still can be victims of many things that can disturb our peace of mind and threaten our well-being.  This is not a call for us to be reckless or uncaring but to realize, and reaffirm were our life force comes from and what is the most important relationship for us to nurture.

As the Psalm continues there is kind of a listing of challenges that can confront one and were the wise look for resolution and protection. It might serve us well, especially during the Advent season, when we view an Advent Candle or the Nativity scene. To remind ourselves, The Lord is my light and salvation; whom should I fear?
