| The name
Handy is derived from the Norwegian name Handemyhren that was the
name of their farm in Norway. The farm Handy is still to be
found in south-central Norway. It is thought that a knoll
was used in ancient days as a place for peacemaking. The
knoll was located between the northern and southern parts of the
Valdres district, and the people went there to settle their
disputes and to formalize their agreement with the shaking of
hands. Thus the place was known as Hande.
Because of this the
Hanemyhren name was eventually shortened to Hande in honor of the
ancient peacemaking knoll. When then family eventually
migrated to America the spelling of the name was again slightly
changed to its present day spelling, Handy.
The Handys eventually settled in central
Minnesota and later in Polk County near Trail, Minnesota.
Handy Farms near Trail is still in existence and is now owned by
fourth generation Handys. It boasts one of the few remaining
round barns in north Minnesota. Today in your town Handy
Farms has another meaning, warm hospitality and great food
