Psalm 139 I like pulling out the Bible trivia cards and quizzing the kids on Wednesday nights. There is all kinds of great information about the people of the Bible for us to know. But there is something about this that is kind of startling for me today - I thought I knew a lot about the people of the Bible, but the truth is we know very little. I know more about the people of this church than I do about the actual people of the Bible. I know more about you, than any of these that I just read about. I see you living out your lives - and you see mine. I know a lot about you and you know a lot about me.
But, who knows us the best?
Our neighbors know a lot about us.
Our families know more about us.
But we know that the Lord God is the One who truly knows us.
Does that encourage you or does that bring concern to you?
Psalm 139 tells us to go to the One who really knows.
Let's look at two things from this Psalm:
I. A Serious Theological Confession - "O Lord, You have searched me and You know me" (Psalm 139:1-22).
This is a serious theological confession - Lord, you have searched me and you know me.
II. A Powerful Prayerful Concession - "O God, search me and know me" (Psalm 139:23-24).
One time I was using the Bible trivia cards with little children preschool and Kindergarten. I was giving the clues in the right order from the most vague to the obvious. They could get it. They did not know who I was speaking of. They were trying so hard but their little minds did not know anything about these Bible characters. So, I had to simplify things a little bit. I went down the line and said to everyone of them - I was in the garden of Eden and was married to Eve. They all started chanting Adam, Adam, Adam. They were all cheering and chanting and I was laughing. In the end everybody won and everybody got a piece of candy.
God knows us - by faith I believe He knows everyone who has ever been and ever will be.
