Psalm 1
We believe and obey God’s Word.
Are you still believing and obeying God’s Word?
Do you delight in this?
Psalm 1 says:
Blessed is the man who walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly; nor standeth in the way of sinners; or sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the Lord and in his law doth he mediate day and night.
Do you still believe this?
Do you still desire to obey this?
If you do you are on your way to the refuge.
Or you have found the Lord as your refuge and you are inviting others to come on this road and join you.
GAL 5:7 You were running a good race. Who cut in on you and kept you from obeying the truth?
Are you still believing and obeying - or have you for some reason quit?
Don’t be surprised about the many things that will make you want to quit - says James and Peter.
How does this work?
Why is this so important?
We have the Word of God; translated and understandable; waiting to be read; are you reading it?
John Wycliffe (the Bible translators named after him) was burned at the stake in England. I heard it told that he had a chance to make peace with the King of England. Wycliffe said he would make peace if they would allow him to translate the Bible in to the common language. They burned him at the stake for this.
This is not some sort of "work" that you would do in order to be saved; but it is like water to the body. I heard that we can live 3 days without water. Is that true?
How many days can a born again Christian live without this water?
When you take refuge in the Lord (not in money, not in pleasure, not in idols, not in religion and tradition); when you take your refuge in the Lord, you find out that you can’t live one week, one day, one hour, even one moment without His Word.
You can try it.
Multiple trials will make you question it.
But all who know the truth always come back to this:
"Thy word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path" (Psalm 119:105).
"Thy word have I hidden in my heart that I might not sin against thee" (Psalm 119:11).
Psalm 19:7 The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple. 8 The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes. 9 The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether. 10 More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb. 11 Moreover by them is thy servant warned: and in keeping of them there is great reward.
There are three rewards for those who delight in God’s Word.
I. Blessing (Psalm 1:1-2) - "Blessed is the man".
Rather: His delight is in the Law of the Lord! And in His Law he meditates day and night.
II. Maturity (Psalm 1:3) - "drinks water, yields fruit, does not wither".
Delighting in God’s Word is to drink from God’s Word.
This is connected to our devotion.
Or as we ask - are you having your devotions?
Do not doubt this; much spiritual blood has been shed in this church age in order to say this.
- Daily Bread - Reading of Bible chapters - Reading of Bible books - Reading through the Bible
When we do this, exegesis and exposition (finding out what the Word says and then saying it) of individual verses and passages will take a shape and form that we had not before seen.
Not magical and mystical - but spiritual. It makes one grow!
III. Assurance (Psalm 1:4-6) - "the Lord watches over the righteous".
This is the culminating truth - similar to "God is good".
All through the trials and questions of the Psalms we have seen so far.
Blessing. Maturity. Assurance.
Three rewards for those who delight in God’s Word.
