The Sanctuary is the result of sound soil, water, and wildlife management
principles. On-going efforts to build upon these commitments help to
ensure continued success in maintaining refugia for wildlife while
simultaneously creating environmental education opportunities.
These current efforts include:
- (Fall 2002) Installed a bear den site
- (Spring 2002)Planted wildlife food plots of fruit-bearing trees and shrubs
for wildlife food and shelter.
- (Autumn 2001) Enhanced a created wetland to include an
island and more open water.
- (Autumn 2000) A prescribed burn was conducted on parcels of
restored prairie to revitalize native vegetation, slow woody
vegetative encroachment, and improve habitat for grassland
nesting birds.
- (Summer 2000) Created a mudflat near an existing waterway
for shorebirds.
- (Summer 2000) Prepared parcels for future plantings of fruit
bearing trees and shrubs.
- (Summer 2000) Prepared 160 acres for Spring 2001 planting of
74,000 native coniferous and deciduous trees.
- (Autumn 1999) Restored 160 acres of prairie by planting
native grasses and forbs.
- Future plans include planting plots of ponderosa, red, and
white pine.
